Dr. Lukas Hawinkels

Asscociate professor and head of research laboratory Gastroenterology

ORCID: 0000-0002-2274-9325

After graduating in Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Lukas performed his PhD at the LUMC on the impact of interactions between cells in the tumour microenvironment on tumor progression, revealing a key role for fibroblasts. Next he joined the TGFβ group as a postdoc, where he combined his expertise in fibroblast biology and clinical sample analyses with therapeutic targeting of TGFβ. With a personal Alpe d’HuZes/Bas Mulder grant, Lukas started an independent research line on the role of specific fibroblasts in the metastatic spread of GI cancers. In 2015 he was recruited to the gastroenterology department, where he extended his studies to inflammatory bowel disease. Since 2018 he is head of the research laboratory Gastroenterology/Associate professor. He combines his passion for basic/early translational fibroblast research, with collaboration with academic/private partners using advanced, multicellular close-to-patient models. Next to research he is a teacher and exam committee vice chair for biomedical sciences, chair of the NVGE/experimental gastroenterology and has various positions in national committees.

Areas of interest: fibroblast, gastrointestinal cancers, IBD, TGFb, close-to-patient models
